Engine Overheating: Causes, Prevention & What to Do

An overheating engine is a serious warning, not a minor annoyance. Let the temperature climb and you risk a blown head gasket, a warped cylinder head or a cracked block, repairs that can cost far more than the car is worth on paper.

This guide explains the common causes, the warning signs to catch early and exactly what to do if the temperature gauge climbs. Knowing the right steps can save both your engine and a very expensive workshop bill.

Common Causes of Overheating

The most frequent culprit in India is a leaking or low coolant system, often from a cracked hose, a failed radiator cap or a slow leak in the radiator. A faulty thermostat can also stick closed and stop coolant from circulating, causing rapid temperature spikes.

Other causes include a clogged radiator from dust and insects, a failing water pump, a broken cooling fan or its relay, and a blown head gasket that lets combustion gases into the coolant. Traffic jams in summer make every one of these worse.

Warning Signs to Watch

The temperature gauge creeping past the middle, a warning light, a sweet syrupy smell of coolant, or green, pink or orange fluid under the car are clear alerts. Steam or hissing from the bonnet means you should stop as soon as it is safe.

Do not ignore a heater that suddenly blows cold, since that can signal low coolant, and note any white smoke from the exhaust, which may point to a head gasket problem. Acting on early signs keeps small faults from becoming major damage.

What to Do If It Overheats

Pull over safely, switch off the engine and the air conditioner, and wait at least twenty minutes before opening anything. Never remove the radiator cap while the engine is hot, because pressurised coolant can erupt and cause severe burns.

Once cool, check the coolant level in the reservoir and look for obvious leaks. If the level is low and you have coolant, top it up. Do not pour cold water into a hot engine, as the thermal shock can crack components. Call for help if it repeats.

  • Stop safely and switch the engine off
  • Turn off the AC and let the engine cool fully
  • Never open the radiator cap while hot
  • Check and top up coolant only when cool
  • Get the system pressure-tested if it happens again

Preventing Overheating

Check coolant level and condition every couple of weeks, and top up with the correct coolant mix rather than plain water. Get the radiator, hoses and fan checked at each major service, and have the radiator cleaned of dust and bugs before summer.

Keep an eye on the temperature gauge in traffic and switch off the AC if it starts to climb. Using the recommended engine oil and servicing the cooling system on schedule both reduce the load on an already hard-working engine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I drive a car that is overheating?

Only a very short distance to reach safety, and never once steam or a red warning appears. Continuing to drive risks warping the cylinder head or blowing the head gasket. If the temperature gauge is climbing, stopping early is far cheaper than repairing the engine later.

Why does my car overheat only in traffic?

Overheating in slow traffic usually points to a weak cooling fan, a failing fan relay or a partly clogged radiator. At speed, airflow alone cools the engine, so the fault hides until you stop. Get the fan operation and radiator condition checked promptly.

Is water enough as engine coolant?

No. Water alone boils at a lower temperature, offers no corrosion protection and can scale the radiator over time. Use a proper coolant mixed in the correct ratio with water. It raises the boiling point, prevents freezing and protects the cooling system from rust.
